This is part 1 of our 3 part review of their wonderfully nuanced new album, Running Jumping Falling Shouting. Fans of Michael Penn, Pernice Brothers, Emitt Rhodes, and Fountains of Wayne will love these skilled musicians.
PART ONE
Trust
I really love the conflicting elements I this song. It goes from pretty upbeat to kind of angsty in a heartbeat. This song just screams “friendzone!” and I love every second of it.
Sentimentalitis
All I can think when I hear this song is “Harsh man,”. I guess they’re called The Breakups for a reason. Despite the sometimes abrasive lyrics, this song keeps me tapping my feet all the way through.
Dizzyland
There have to be about a million people that can relate to the sort-of-cynical lyrics that make up this song. I know I can. All I can really say about this song is that this is the kind of stuff Taylor Swift wishes she could write about.
Amelia (You Won’t Believe)
A classic “don’t give up” song that’s got it all. Allienation, trials, family that just doesn’t understand, and someone that’s waiting with open arms. As you listen, to might find your self Cheering for Amelia. “Go back Amelia!! You can do it!”
